Publisher Assunta Ng started the Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation in 1994 because she felt that there
was a need in the community -- to celebrate the great achievements of people of color and, at
the same time, inspire a new generation of young people into following in their footsteps.
The very first event organized by the foundation was the Diversity Makes a Difference
scholarship gala in 1994, which recognized the outstanding volunteerism of students in the
Greater-Seattle area by awarding them with scholarships to help them attend the college or
university of their choice. This annual event continues to this day.
The Northwest Asian Weekly Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization.
